Question: Can You Have Two Hot Water Heaters

Note: Both water heaters must be ON, and set to same temperature. If one heater is off, then it will add cold water to the line while other water heater supplies hot. Ideally you want 50% from each heater, otherwise one heater will run out of hot before the other heater, and begin to add cold water to the line.
Why would a house have 2 water heaters?
Greater efficiency can be achieved by installing multiple, smaller tankless water heaters throughout the home. Hot water is then drawn from nearby tankless appliances instead of being lead through the home's entire plumbing system from basement to point-of-use.
Is it better to have two water heaters or one big one?
Keep in mind that you only heat the water you use, so a bigger tank by itself won't have much more cost unless you draw more water from it and therefore have to heat more - IOW, keeping it hot isn't a big thing, and the standby losses of one big one would be less than two smaller ones.
How do 2 water heaters work?
Simply stated, 2 water heaters installed in Series means cold water enters the first heater, often referred to as upstream, and travels through the second heater, referred to as downstream, on it's way to the demand point.
Should I get a second water heater?
If you have fixtures or appliances located some distance apart, it may be advisable to install two or more point-of-use on-demand water heaters to avoid unnecessary energy losses and prolonged delivery times.
Can I turn off one of my water heaters?
If you want to turn off one of the water heaters, you also have to close the valve to the inlet or the outlet. Otherwise you will just be mixing the cold water in one water heater with the hot water from the other heater.
Are bigger water heaters better?
Bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to choosing the size of a water heater. If you install a tank that's too small, you'll run out of hot water before finishing the shower. And if you get a tank that's too big, you're wasting money on heating water they won't use.
How do you connect two water tanks together?
The first method is connecting the tanks at the top. This involves using the overflow from one tank as the connection to another tank. The first tank in the succession fills and then its overflow fills the second tank and then third, etc. The last tank must have an overflow.
How do I get more hot water out of my water heater?
Tempering Valve: If your current water heater is fairly new, well insulated, and in good condition, adding a tempering valve (aka. mixing valve) to your water heater can soup up your hot water capacity. After the device is installed, the water temperature in the tank can be increased well above the normal setting.
Do both water heater elements work at the same time?
On a duel element residential water heater, both elements do not heat at the same time. Starting with a tank of cold water, the upper thermostat will energize the upper element.
What happens when a heating element goes out in a water heater?
If you have an electric water heater, the heating elements inside the tank can break and lead to a loss of hot water. Sometimes, your water will slowly start to cool down and this could be because the element has burned out. If the second element fails, you'll be left with only cold water.
Will a water heater work with one element?
Yes, a water heater can still run if the bottom element quits. In most water heaters, the top heating element controls the thermostat and will still work even if the bottom element fails. So provided the top heating element is working, it can still produce some hot water even if the bottom heating element fails.
Can I add another water heater to my house?
An electric tankless water heater booster can add up to 45% capacity to an existing water heater tank, increasing the amount of available hot water. Your home may not have room for a larger water heater tank.
How much does it cost to replace a 40-gallon water heater?
Water heater costs by gallon A standard 40-gallon water heater costs $330 to $1,500 for the unit alone, or $500 to $2,500 including installation labor. *Price for tank unit only, not including installation.
Can I replace my water heater with a larger one?
Bigger homes usually require bigger water heaters or more than one smaller one. For smaller homes where one or two people live a 30- or 40-gallon tank may be enough but be careful. If the tank is too small it will run all the time trying to keep up with demand and wear out faster than it should.
Should I turn water heater off if leaking?
If you experience a leaking water heater, it is recommended to turn off the water to your tank. Your water heater tank should have a dedicated shutoff valve on the cold inlet pipes. If this is a gate-style valve (a wheel that turns), turn the valve clockwise as far as you can.
Why would a water heater leak from the bottom?
All hot water heaters come with a drain that's close to the bottom of the unit so the tank can be fully vacated for performing routine clean-ups, or prior to removing the tank. A leaky drain valve can be detected by dripping water or moisture, either around the valve itself or out of the drain opening.
Can a water heater explode?
Water heater explosions are terrifying, and they can happen. Anything that causes excess pressure on your water heating system, such as a poor anode rod, or a lot of sediment buildup, can all cause your water heater to explode. A gas leak can also cause your water heater to explode because it is a tremendous fire risk.
Does an old water heater use more electricity?
A. New water heaters are more energy efficient than old ones, but there is no need to replace an old one which is not leaking. From the standpoint of using electricity to heat the water, all electric water heaters, even the old ones, have nearly 100-percent heating efficiency.
